About Brown

Lucille M. Brown Middle School serves over 650 students in grades 6-8. We are a public school that is part of Richmond City Public Schools in Richmond, Virginia, USA. We are also an International Baccalaureate, or IB, school. Getting involved in our local community is a core experience for all of our IB students. Engaging in helpful, safe, and meaningful activities is part of the learning experience beyond the classroom. Learning at LMBMS seeks to connect the curriculum with real-world needs and solutions. Our students are encouraged to develop their interests, passions, and skills over the course of their middle school years.

Our motto: LMBMS students will become caring, respectful individuals who inquire, learn, reflect, and take action to better our global society.

In 1998, our school was named for Dr. Lucille Murray Brown. Dr. Brown was a phenomenal example of Lifelong Education for our students. 

Dr. Lucille Murray Brown was born to the late Mary Coleman Murray and William E. Murray, Sr., on March 26, 1929, in Columbia, South Carolina. She was the third born of four children to this union.

  • Graduated from Armstrong High School in 1946 with an academic rank of three (3) in a class of more than 350 students.
  • Lucille was married to the late Dr. Theodore R. Coots Brown, Sr., for 47 years. To this union was born one son, Theodore R. Coots Brown, Jr. Dr. Theodore Brown, Sr., also a graduate of Armstrong High School, Virginia Union University, and Howard University, was a prominent physician in the Richmond community and worked alongside Lucille as a community advocate.
  • In 1995, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from both Virginia State University and the University of Richmond.
  • Graduated in 1950 from Virginia Union University with a Bachelor of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Biology.
  • She was a member of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society at Virginia Union, a member of the national science honor society, and President of the Class of 1950.
  • Lucille earned her Master of Science degree in Zoology at Howard University, from which she graduated with honors in 1952.
  • Dr. Lucille Murray Brown began her career in 1954 at Luther Jackson High School in Fairfax, Virginia. Three years later, she started her 38-year career with Richmond Public Schools as a teacher at Armstrong High School. During her tenure, she served as a Teacher, Principal, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent. Dr. Brown holds a BS from Virginia Union University and a Master's degree from Howard University.
  • Lucille furthered her studies in educational administration and supervision at the University of Virginia, the University of Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia State University.
  • In 1995, Lucille was awarded an honorary doctorate from both Virginia State University and the University of Richmond. Lucille also held membership in the Richmond Chapter, National Epicureans, Incorporated, for over 60 years, where she held several leadership positions, including Financial Secretary. Additionally, Lucille was a life member of the NAACP.
  • In 1998, Lucille M. Brown Middle School was dedicated. The school was named in honor of Dr. Lucille Murray Brown during her retirement and dedication ceremony that year.
  • At the May 2025 Commencement, Virginia Union recognized Lucille as one of the two remaining 1950 VUU graduates.
  • Dr. Lucille Murray Brown Died on June 5, 2025.
